How do you get a provisional driving licence?

When you are preparing for your driving lessons you will need to obtain a provisional driving licence. You can apply for a provisional driving licence up to 3 months before you turn 16 so that you are prepared in plenty of time to start learning as soon as you are 17.

You can now apply for a provisional driving licence online using this link:- "Driver licensing online" or you need to call at a post office and obtain a form D1 which is the application for a provisional driving licence, you also need to get an up to date passport style photograph which may need countersigning. The provisional driving licence application form should also come with an information booklet (INF1D) containing detailed information on how to fill the application out correctly.

You should also be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 20 metres (65 feet), if the number plate you are reading is one of the slighty older style (pre-2001) number plates, then you should be able to read this from 20.5 metres (67 feet).
